SET UP & RULES

Game Rules

The game begins with a murder (fictional, of course) that has already been committed, and it’s up to the players to deduce the identity of the killer, the murder weapon, and the location of the crime. These three pieces of the puzzle are hidden in the Confidential Case File, which remains sealed until the end of the game.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Setting Up the Game:

    • First, separate the suspect, weapon, and room cards into three different piles. Shuffle each pile and randomly select one card from each. These three cards will represent the killer, the murder weapon, and the room where the crime occurred. Place these cards in the Confidential Case File—no peeking!
    • Shuffle the remaining cards (which will contain the rest of the suspects, weapons, and rooms) and deal them out evenly to all players. These cards are your first clues to solving the mystery, as they show which people, places, and things are not involved in the crime.
  2. Moving Around the Board:

    • Each player rolls the dice and moves around the mansion from room to room. Your goal is to enter rooms so you can make guesses about the crime.
    • When you enter a room, you can make a suggestion: for example, “I suggest it was Colonel Mustard, in the Kitchen, with the Wrench.”
    • If any other player holds any of the cards you’ve suggested (for example, if someone has the Kitchen card), they must show you one of them privately. This helps you narrow down the possibilities.
  3. Keeping Track:

    • Use your detective notepad to keep track of the clues you’ve been shown. Mark off suspects, weapons, and rooms that other players reveal to you, so you can figure out which three cards are in the Confidential Case File.
    • As you gather more information, you’ll start to form a hypothesis. It’s essential to keep your findings to yourself—you don’t want to help the other players get ahead!
  4. Making an Accusation:

    • When you think you’ve cracked the case, you can make an accusation on your turn. For example, “I accuse Mrs. Peacock, in the Study, with the Rope.”
    • After making your accusation, secretly check the Confidential Case File. If your guess is correct, you win the game! If you're wrong, you’re out, and the game continues for the remaining players.

CLUEDO IN DETAIL

A Brief History of the Famous Board Game

Cluedo was the brainchild of Anthony E. Pratt, a British musician who came up with the idea during World War II as a way to pass the time during air raid blackouts. The game was originally called “Murder!” but thankfully that title was softened when the game was published by Waddingtons in 1949 as Cluedo, a blend of "clue" and "ludo" (Latin for "I play").

From its humble beginnings, Cluedo spread across the world, gaining a cult following, and later, the game was adapted into books, movies, and even a cult-classic film in 1985 that gave us one of the best ensemble comedies of all time. Today, Cluedo remains a favorite for anyone who enjoys a bit of friendly suspicion, tactical gameplay, and of course, solving mysteries.

The Setting: A Murder in the Mansion

In Cluedo, the scene is set at the grand Tudor Mansion, home to wealthy and eccentric host Mr. Boddy. But Mr. Boddy has met an untimely end—he’s been murdered! The game’s players assume the roles of six suspects, each with their own possible motive for offing the unfortunate host. The question is, who killed Mr. Boddy, with what weapon, and in which room?

The mansion consists of several rooms where the crime could have taken place, including the Study, Library, Conservatory, and everyone’s favorite, the Billiard Room (seriously, who doesn’t love a good mystery in the Billiard Room?). The mansion also features hidden passageways that add an extra layer of intrigue as players try to piece together the crime.

The Cast of Characters

Cluedo boasts a colorful cast of suspects, each with a unique personality and a potential motive for murder. These include:

  • Colonel Mustard: A retired military man with a penchant for violence. He’s suspiciously comfortable holding a weapon.
  • Miss Scarlet: A glamorous femme fatale, often starting in the Lounge, looking just a little too unconcerned about the murder.
  • Professor Plum: An academic with too much knowledge and not enough common sense. He’s smart but shady.
  • Mrs. Peacock: A society lady with a mysterious past. Her pearls and air of sophistication may hide dark secrets.
  • Reverend Green (or Mr. Green in some versions): The supposedly righteous reverend—just don’t ask what he’s hiding under that robe.
  • Dr. Orchid: A relatively new addition, Dr. Orchid is a scientist with a background in toxicology—very suspicious indeed.

With such an eclectic group of characters, the investigation gets complicated, and the drama is palpable.

Tips for Playing Cluedo

Though Cluedo is a game of deduction, a few strategic moves can help you stay ahead of your fellow detectives.

  • Keep Your Cards Close: The more you reveal, the more your opponents know. When showing cards in response to suggestions, try to give away the least useful information to keep your competitors guessing.
  • Bluff Strategically: Sometimes suggesting a suspect, weapon, or room you already know to be innocent can throw others off the scent, leading them away from the real solution.
  • Move Wisely: Getting to key rooms quickly can give you an advantage in narrowing down possibilities. Take advantage of the hidden passageways to cross the board efficiently.

Variants of Cluedo

The classic game of Cluedo is fantastic as is, but there are some exciting variations and themed editions that can spice up the murder mystery.

  • Clue: Harry Potter Edition: Solve a magical mystery at Hogwarts as you play as characters like Harry, Hermione, or Ron. Rather than murder, you’ll investigate the disappearance of a student while navigating magical rooms and spells.
  • Clue: Sherlock Edition: Channel your inner Sherlock Holmes in this themed version of Cluedo, where you solve crimes in Victorian London. Expect lots of deducing and the occasional cup of tea.
  • Clue: Supernatural Edition: In this spooky edition, you’re hunting for the demon or monster that’s been wreaking havoc. Play as the Winchester brothers and take on a supernatural spin on the classic game.

For those looking for a more custom twist, you can introduce house rules such as a "double-bluff" system, allowing players to make false accusations just to throw off others.

Conclusion

Cluedo is a timeless game of suspense, deduction, and intrigue that never fails to entertain. Whether you're trying to uncover a dastardly crime or simply enjoying the satisfaction of piecing together clues, Cluedo brings out the detective in all of us.

The real joy in Cluedo isn’t just solving the mystery but in the process—accusations are made, suspicions arise, and the tension builds until the final reveal. So grab your magnifying glass, channel your inner detective, and get ready to solve the crime. Was it Professor Plum in the Ballroom with the Candlestick, or perhaps Miss Scarlet in the Lounge with the Dagger? There’s only one way to find out…
