Ghost Giant Review – Problems Starting The Game?

Ghost Giant

I’ve previously written about my experiences with the QUEST VR. I really love the system and I typically spend my time playing shooters.

Last weekend I downloaded a new VR game called ‘Ghost Giant‘. I knew nothing about it and did zero research about the game. Nevertheless, the cute character on the Quest’s Store made it look attractive.

I paid £18.99, downloaded it and hit install. Instantly I ran into a problem. A very frustrating problem! The set-up for the game is relatively easy, pull a few virtual levers and adjust viewing height to your physical height. Great, but then nothing happens! I got stuck in a virtual black hole.

After 10 frustrating minutes trying to set-up ‘GHOST GIANT,’ I finally figured it out. The game tells you to press (and hold) the pause button. Now, to be fair to the games developers, I read that instruction as ‘press pause’, I did that multiple times without anything happening. The TRICK IS TO PRESS AND HOLD THE PAUSE BUTTON for a few seconds. Once you do that the game will start no problem.

TO START THE GAME… HOLD THE PAUSE BUTTON FOR LONGER

I’m unsure if anyone else had this problem with Ghost Giant? Or it was just me being dumb. The game developers might want to add a prompt if the user fails to hold the pause button for long enough. Or just auto-start the game? What’s the point of holding the pause button?

Thankfully, I didn’t give up on this game – because it’s epically brilliant. I’d go as far as to say that it could completely change the direction of the VR games market. The main game loads and you find yourself as a giant in a tiny world. The perspective is fascinating and nothing like anything else I’ve experienced in VR before. Frequently VR games place you in a big expansive room or universe. In Ghost Giant, the view is completely reversed.

When the game loads you’re transported to a beautifully rendered tiny world. You look down on the trees, house and lake. Standing by the water is the super cute hero of this game – Louis, an 11-year-old kitten from the town of Sancourt. Use your giant hands to help Louis in his quest. Remember, Louis is the only one who can see you!

Ghost Giant takes elements of puzzle and platform games and mixes them into a deeply immersive story/game. Youngsters will love the cuteness of the title. Adults will marvel at the beautiful scenery and hidden gems. I was continually peaking into all the tiny homes. You’ll have to listen carefully to Louis, as he drops hints and tips on what you need to do next. There are many magical moments to uncover as you work your way through the game’s 13 levels.

Overall, this has been my favourite game/experience while playing the Oculus Quest. It also got my mind racing at the possibilities for this top-down perspective view. It would be perfect for strategy games such as ‘Rome-Total War’ or ‘Tower Defense’ titles. I can also see it being used successfully for platform games.

Do yourself a favour and download this game now! You won’t be disappointed. If you’ve already downloaded and couldn’t get it to work – remember, press and HOLD the pause button.
