Battlefield 5 Free Play Weekends

DICE the company behind the first-person shooter franchise ‘Battlefield’ is offering PC gamers the chance to play the latest incarnation of their game for free during October.

DICE announced that BATTLEFIELD 5 would be free to play on the following weekends. 10-13 Oct, 17-20 Oct and 24-27 Oct. Players will be able to experience the World War Two based game in various modes during the trial period. The first weekend will feature the ‘RUSH’ game mode on the newly released map ‘Operation Underground’ and player favourite ‘Rotterdam’.

The second weekend will give players a chance to play ‘Conquest’ on Operation Underground, Rotterdam, Devastation, Marita and Arras.

The final free weekend will focus on ‘Grand Operation’ game modes on ‘Panzerstorm’ and the beautifully rendered ‘Narvik’ map, with its Northern Light display and awesome Whale easter egg.

All progress made during the free-to-play weekends will be saved should you buy the full version of the game. It’s worth pointing out that Battlefield 5’s entire single-player campaign, will be available to play during all three weekends. Although ‘Battlefield’ main attraction is its 64 player extensive online combat modes.

NEW BATTLEFIELD MAPS

One criticism levelled at Battlefield 5 is the limited number of multiple maps at launch. Previous versions of the game featured many more environments to explore and explode. This limited number of maps has irked fans of the game. However, DICE has been quick to allay player concerns with the promise of new map releases.

In July 2019 DICE added the ‘Marita’ map to the franchise, then last week DICE dropped ‘Operation Underground’ too much fanfare. The map is reminiscent of ‘Operation Metro’ from Battlefield 3 and the Call Of Duty – World At War classic ‘Subway’.

THE FUTURE OF BATTLEFIELD 5

It remains to be seen if DICE will continue to release new maps for BATTLEFIELD 5 beyond 2020. The launch of ‘Call Of Duty – Mobile’ has taken the gaming world by storm. Since its release in early October COD has been downloaded over 100 million times! Making it more successful than Fortnite and PBUG. It’s not hard to see how EA, the makers of ‘Call Of Duty – Mobile’ can leverage the mobile platform to draw players away from BATTLEFIELD and DICE. If enough players abandon BATTLEFIELD, then DICE will have to make some hard choices to make. We could be witnessing the final battle in the first-person shooter war.
